Info

In stepping through the mirror, the spectators, having become actors, find themselves confronted with the inversion of the rules of the game. Like their original - Velázquez’s famous painting from 1656 -  Las Meninas (The Maids of Honour) call the prevailing conventions into question. The dimensions of the real, the imagined, the virtual and the visible all centre on the question: Who is observing whom?

A tragic-comic role play that subverts the spatial dispositif of performance as much as scenic arrangements inasmuch as the body becomes the site of all conflicts. Filmed, cut, fragmented, the body appears as an accumulation of details that never manages to become a whole. And what if the obvious deconstruction in Las Meninas was a form to call the model itself into question?

Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe was born in Kinshasa (DRC) and grows up in France where she studies Fine Arts. In 1998 she obtains her Master degree in Plastic Arts with honors for her work of sculpture at the Tourcoing School of the Arts (FR). As a performer she keeps on collaborating with Robyn Orlin on various film projects and choreographic processes involving  objects. She  collaborated with among others Serge-Aymé Coulibaly, Graciane Finzi, Faustin Lyniékula, Oleg Soulimenko,Claudia Bosse. Her reflection in Fine Arts is based on organic architecture and her choreographic work is essentially oriented towards the sensitive and fragile dimension of the body. At the center of her work lies the critique of the concept of normality that she considers tyrannical and degrading.
